According to reports, a policeman has “mistakenly” shot a bullion van driver who died instantly at Odumase Krobo, Saturday.
The sad incident occurred when the police officer stepped out of the bullion car to maintain law and order on the road.
According to an eyewitness, the irate youth were on their way to bury a deceased 22-year-old lady at the cemetery. Upon getting to the main road, they dropped the coffin amidst the usual chanting of dirges.
The policeman seeing their behaviour as an obstacle to traffic, law, and order, fired warning shots, an act which infuriated the already irate youth. They subsequently went after the police officer who in an attempt to defend himself shot one in the leg.
The bullion van driver realizing the chaotic scene stepped out of the van but was mistakenly shot by the police officer. The crowd seeing the turn of events fled, leaving the coffin in the middle of the road.
According to the eyewitness, the policeman reported himself to the nearest police station. The body has since been sent to the morgue.
The Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh has confirmed the report.
